Abstract
Grafted eggplant production increases by about 25%. An important financial output requires that the production of fresh eggplant for the domestic market is optimally managed, also through storage.
Tomato rootstocks are popular for eggplant grafting in Europe.
The purpose of this research was to highlight the response of some eggplants grafted onto interspecific tomato hybrid rootstocks to postharvest techniques for optimal fruit quality preservation during storage.
The research was conducted in the laboratories of ICDIMPH-HORTING, Bucharest.
The vegetal material consisted of fruits from grafted and non-grafted plants.
The grafted plants were obtained from a black eggplant scion, ‘Classic F1’ (Solanum melongena L.), and two tomato rootstocks, interspecific hybrids (Solanum lycopersicum × Solanum habrochaites), ‘Kaiser F1’, and ‘Emperador F1’. The storage of grafted and non-grafted eggplants (control) was conducted for 10 days in plastic crates under conditions of hemibiosis and physioanabiosis.
The results indicated that tomato rootstocks had an insignificant positive effect on the quality of eggplants stored under microclimate conditions.
The conclusions of this study require further research to identify combinations of genotypes compatible with grafting and likely to confer high storage capacity.
