Uses of mineral oils from commercial formulas in controlling oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel) and mealybug (Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Bimpel & Miller)

Abstract
The effectiveness of mineral oils (MOs) from commercial formulations, petroleum oil (PO: 83.9% EC, recommended dose of 0.26%), and white oil (WO: 67% EC, recommended dose of 0.34%) in controlling insect pests of fruit trees under laboratory conditions was evaluated.
The insecticidal properties of those MOs were tested against the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel) in the form of oviposition inhibition occurring in mango fruit.
In contrast, the killing activity was tested against the mealybug (Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Bimpel & Miller) on okra fruit.
All MO tests were conducted at concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% to compare with chemical insecticides (CIs; positive control), a mixture of MOs and CIs, and water (negative control). The CIs used for oriental fruit fly were malathion insecticide (MI; 83% EC, recommended dose at 0.17%), while for mealybug were triazophos insecticide (TI; 40% EC, recommended dose at 0.08%). The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replicates.
The results demonstrated that all MO treatments were moderately effective at inhibiting oviposition in the oriental fruit fly, with significantly greater inhibition than the positive and negative controls.
A remarkably successful result of MI that could completely control the fruit fly.
As for the test on the mealybug, MOs had little effect (<25% at 0.4% MOs). Additionally, 0.1% TI was moderately effective against the mealybug, with <65% mortality.
Interestingly, TI had a greater effect when mixed with MOs; 0.1% TI mixed with 0.2% MOs could control the mealbug up to 90% at 24 h.
