Assessing the independent and synergistic effect of poultry manure and NPK fertilizer on the growth of artemisia (Artemisia annua L.) in the Northern Guinea savanna of Nigeria

Abstract
Malaria remains a health challenge in Nigeria, with children and pregnant women being the most vulnerable.
The parasite Plasmodium falciparum commonly causes this disease and has developed resistance to most of the drugs being administered over time.
Artemisinin, a compound contained mostly in the foliage of Artemisia annua L., has proven to be potent in the treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. A field trial was carried out at the Research field of the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in the Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria to determine the effect of poultry manure, NPK fertilizer, and their combined application on the foliage yield of Artemisia annua L. in the 2022 and 2023 rainy season.
The treatments consisted of 100 kg ha‑1 NPK (20 kg ha‑1 N, 10 kg ha‑1 P2O5 and 10 kg ha‑1 K2O), 200 kg ha‑1 NPK (40 kg ha‑1 N, 20 kg ha‑1 P2O5 and 20 kg ha‑1 K2O) and 300 kg ha‑1 NPK (60 kg ha‑1 N, 30 kg ha‑1 P2O5 and 30 kg ha‑1 K2O) fertilizer and poultry manure (PM) at 2, 4 and 6 t ha‑1 applied independently and also combined (100 kg ha‑1 NPK + 2 t ha‑1 PM, 100 kg ha‑1 NPK + 4 t ha‑1 PM, 100 kg ha‑1 NPK + 6 t ha‑1 PM, 200 kg ha‑1 NPK + 2 t ha‑1 PM, 200 kg ha‑1 NPK + 4 t ha‑1 PM, 200 kg ha‑1 NPK + 6 t ha‑1 PM, 300 kg ha‑1 NPK + 2 t ha‑1 PM, 300 kg ha‑1 NPK + 4 t ha‑1 PM and 300 kg ha‑1 NPK + 6 t ha‑1 PM). Results showed that the application of 200 kg ha‑1 NPK + 4 t ha‑1 PM gave the highest foliage yield of 1780 kg ha‑1 in 2022 and 2670 kg ha‑1 in 2023 while the least 475 and 712.5 kg ha‑1 were obtained at 2 t ha‑1 of PM alone in both years, respectively.
Based on the two years’ trial, applied 200 kg ha‑1 NPK + 4 t ha‑1 gave the highest Artemisia annua L. foliage yield in the Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria and thus can suggested to be adopted for high foliage yields.
