Abstract
Over the past 30 years, the Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR) has developed an integrated research program on Artemisia annua L., encompassing ecophysiology, agronomy, breeding, phenology, phytochemistry, and applied pharmacology.
Confirmation of its C3 photosynthetic metabolism provided the physiological basis for crop management under subtropical conditions.
Environments at higher latitudes with milder mean temperatures favored greater biomass accumulation and artemisinin yield, likely due to reduced photorespiration associated with lower Rubisco oxygenase activity relative to carboxylation.
Recurrent selection enabled the development of elite high-artemisinin genotypes, while phenological studies refined flowering control and harvest timing.
Advances in extraction technologies and biological assays further expanded the pharmaceutical and veterinary applications of the species.
Collectively, these results illustrate a consistent translational pathway from crop production to phytopharmaceutical innovation.
