Artemisia annua and afra: ambassadors for One Health

Abstract
While the initial formulations of the One Health concept primarily focused on human and animal health, subsequent developments have broadened the scope to encompass environmental, soil, and plant health.
As autotrophic organisms, plants form the basis of life on Earth.
They shape ecosystems, regulate the climate, produce oxygen and support food webs.
Two species that stand out among them are A. annua and A. afra, which have systemic properties and act at different biological scales and on different kingdoms of life.
Beyond their well-documented applications in human health, these two species offer significant advantages in livestock farming, agriculture, and market gardening.
Drawing on recent scientific literature and field experiments, this article particularly examines the benefits of the protective effects of soil and plants when used in synergistic fermented formulations.
It also supports the potential role of Artemisia sp. from a unique health perspective and concludes that these plants deserve the title of ‘ambassadors’ of a One Health approach.
