Abstract
Malaria is a life-threatening illness caused by parasites.
This affects a large number of people globally on a yearly basis and it is an important public health issue for developing and most of the African countries.
Artemisinin from Artemisia annua is a vital secondary metabolite used in drug development for the effective treatment of malaria.
This study was undertaken in order to extract, purify and quantify the amount of artemisinin from eight different accessions of Artemisia annua collected and characterized at the Institute for Agricultural Research Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria using maceration method of extraction and spectrophotometer for the quantification.
The leaf samples of eight accessions collected at vegetative stage were air-dried and pulverized.
The samples were extracted using petroleum ether and n-hexane and the extracts obtained were purified and derivatized.
Absorbance values of the extract obtained from each sample in duplicate was determined using UV/VIS spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 253 nm.
The concentration of artemisinin on a dry leaf basis for each accession sample from these two solvents was calculated.
The data collected were analysed using SAS and means were separated using Fisher LSD. The highest yield of 0.17 and 0.10% were obtained from IARART0049 using petroleum ether and n-hexane, respectively.
Artemisinin extraction and quantification was achieved in this study using maceration and UV/VIS spectrophotometric methods with IARART0049 recording the highest artemisinin content.
