Abstract
Advances in agricultural nanotechnology have introduced innovative tools for crop protection and quality enhancement.
Among these tools, chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs) are notable for their biocompatibility and their ability to activate plant defence responses and stimulate the synthesis of secondary metabolites.
This study evaluated the effects of three foliar treatments – methyl jasmonate (MeJ), chitosan nanoparticles (ChNPs), and methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (MeJ-ChNPs) – on the phenolic composition of ‘Monastrell’ grapes and wines during the 2024 season.
Treatments were applied at veraison and in two subsequent weekly applications.
Anthocyanins, flavonols, and tannins were quantified by liquid chromatography, and a sensory evaluation was conducted after malolactic fermentation.
All treatments resulted in higher concentrations of total anthocyanins and flavonols relative to the control wines, and most individual phenolic constituents increased across treatments.
In contrast, tannin concentrations remained higher in the control wines, suggesting a differential modulation of phenolic subclasses in response to the applied treatments.
Sensory differences were detected only between control wines and wines treated with ChNPs.
These preliminary findings suggest that nanotechnology-based elicitors may enhance wine phenolic quality and represent a sustainable strategy for improving grape-derived products, although further validation is required to optimize the formulation and confirm the response across seasons.
