Abstract
The continued challenge of food spoilage and waste demands innovative, sustainable, and eco-driven solutions.
Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and their related nanostructures have attracted attention as potential eco-friendly additives for food preservation.
Their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, largely attributed to their nanoscale size, reactive surface functionalities, and tuneable electronic structure, make them promising candidates for incorporation into active packaging and edible coatings.
In this study, carbon-based nanomaterials were successfully synthesized from different agrowaste sources, including watermelon peel waste (WPW-CNPs), cladode peel waste (CPW-CNPs), and pineapple peel waste (PPW-CNPs), using a hydrothermal method.
The size, structural and chemical composition, and optical and spectral properties of the synthesized CNPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
The antioxidant properties of the synthesized CNPs were evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays.
All samples demonstrated notable free radical-scavenging activity, with CPW-CNPs and WPW exhibiting the highest scavenging activity (62.74 and 70.35%) in the ABTS and DPPH assays, respectively.
This suggests that bioactive compounds retained in CPW-CNPs and WPW-NPs have the potential to neutralize free radicals.
Therefore, the synthesized CNPs have potential as antioxidants and nanofillers for the development of composite polymers for food packaging.
