Abstract
Mpesu (Securidaca longipedunculata), widely distributed in South Africa, is traditionally consumed as root or bark infusions by men to support vitality and reproductive health.
While its primary consumers are men, the plant holds deep cultural significance within local communities as a symbol of indigenous knowledge and traditional medicine.
Despite this, Mpesu remains largely overlooked in scientific research and beverage innovation.
This study highlights its potential as a functional and underutilized beverage crop, combining ethnobotanical relevance with emerging evidence of bioactive properties such as saponins and flavonoids, and their contribution in enhancing the nutritional content of Mpesu-based beverages.
Currently, its use is mainly informal, with roots and bark sold in local markets without standardized processing, dosage and health safety protocols, which raises concerns for its sustainable use.
Developing Mpesu-based beverages could promote male health, preserve indigenous knowledge, support rural livelihoods, and foster biodiversity conservation.
Moreover, positioning Mpesu within beverage innovation responds to the global demand for natural, plant-based functional drinks and creates opportunities for sustainable commercialization.
