Abstract
Postharvest losses of beverage crops caused by phytopathogenic fungi remain a critical challenge to food security and sustainable agricultural production.
Valorizing beverage-related by-products such as rooibos tea waste, into high-value nanomaterials offers a viable strategy for reducing losses while promoting circular bioeconomy practices.
In this study, rooibos tea waste was utilized for the green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). X-ray diffraction confirmed their crystalline nature and high phase purity, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed predominantly spherical morphologies with an average size of 53.18 nm.
Antifungal activity, assessed using the poisoned food technique, demonstrated strong inhibitory effects against key spoilage fungi, Botrytis cinerea. ZnO NPs from raspberry pomace exhibited superior physicochemical properties, higher yields, and enhanced antifungal efficacy, with Botrytis cinerea showing the greatest susceptibility.
These findings highlight the potential of beverage waste-derived ZnO NPs as sustainable antifungal agents for mitigating postharvest spoilage in beverage crops.
