CULTIVAR EVALUATION IN RUBUS AND RIBES IN THE NETHERLANDS

Due to an increased competition on the market for processed fruits small fruit culture in The Netherlands has reduced strongly.
The remaining growers increasingly direct themselves to the fresh market.
Therefore prolonging harvest periods and improving quality (shelflife and taste) became more important.
Although breeding was terminated in 1970, recently some new cultivars of red and black currants and gooseberries were introduced.
Based on cultivar trials in recent years the following cultivars are now being recommended:

raspberry : Glen Clova, Schönemann (Malling Promise, Rode Radboud, Spica)

blackberry : Himalaya, Thornfree, Thornless Evergreen (Black Satin)

red currant : Jonkheer van Tets, Stanza, Rolan, Rotet, Rovada (Rosetta, Rode Rebel)

black currant: Black Reward, Tenah, Tsema, Phoenix

gooseberry : Whinham’s Industry, Achilles (Rosko, Golda, Goudbal)
