BUD SUPPRESSION (‘BLIND BUD’) IN RASPBERRIES

Sub-terminal bud suppression is a disorder of some cultivars in Australasia.
The cause is unknown.
There is no evidence that a pathogen is the primary cause.
Stress factors e.g. wind exposure, increase its incidence.
Cultivars differ in proneness, so the character must be considered in breeding, but non-prone late cultivars may be difficult to breed, because late cultivars are affected much more than early ones.
It is suggested that more knowledge of the chilling requirements of raspberry may help to explain the problem.
