Abstract
Dry weight, fresh weight and the specific fresh weight (mgcm-1) of rose flowers cv Garnette increased with supplementary illumination or carbon dioxide enrichment or both.
Even under the lowest illumination there was complete flower bud retention on the uppermost shoot, while complete abortion occurred in the second shoot.
Partial prevention of abortion was obtained with an increase in illumination.
However, complete bud retention was obtained if single stem rose plants were grown in a CO2-enriched atmosphere.
Lateral bud sprouting of Mercedes roses was stimulated by increasing CO2 concentration; the highest rate of flower bud retention was obtained when longer stems with more leaves were retained.
Also, CO2 enrichment stimulated basal axillary buds into growth.
