Abstract
Several cucumber growth models have been built in recent years.
To predict yields (number of fruits per week) the increasing sources of variance have to be recogniced.
In 1975 experiments were started in Hannover to examine the effects of temperature and radiation.
Temperature was found to be more important for the young crop than within the picking period and radiation (season) was the limiting factor for yield potential.

Earlier attempts to describe the effects by means of multiple regression analysis resulted in models with restricted predictive value.
In order to achieve more stability a hierarchical order in discribing the effects was found.
The potential yield is related to the season, plant age is considered by a second term and the remaining small effects of temperature are taken into account by an additive correction factor.
Suggestions are made for further developments to use the model elsewhere.
