THE EFFECT OF PLANTING DATE, DENSITY, VARIETY AND SHADE ON PRODUCTION OF CUCUMBER UNDER TUNNELS

Experiments were carried out during the winter and early summer seasons of 1987, 1987/88 and 1988/1989 at Kafr El-Sheikh, Nubaria (North Tahreer Co.) and Giza Misr/America Co. while shade trials were carried out during late summer seasons of 1982 and 1983 in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate.

The results show that cucumber yields were different in their response to the planting date and density.
Best results were obtained from planting date of 1 October as winter crop season and from 2 February as early summer season.
The density of 2.0 or 2.5 plants/m² seems to be the best.

Among 17 cvs., the higher total yields were obtained from: Katia, Cordito, Tetenyi F₁, Budai Csemege F₁, Peteta F₁ in winter season and from: Rawa, Nagah and Picabillo in early summer season.

The number of fruits/plant, total yield and the yield of grade "A" increased as shading decreased from 63% to 40% shade during the late summer season.
Best results were obtained from 40% shade treatment.
