Abstract
A novel design of a wetness sensor is presented that is based on the change upon of the optical reflection upon wetting of a glass-air interface.
In a test with five sensors in a Douglas-fir forest, reliable operation over a period of several months was established.
Validation of the method in the forest and in a separate experiment gave good conformity of the recorded wetness with more direct determinations.
