Abstract
It is necessary to measure the water contents in crops non-destructively and continuously in order to irrigate efficiently.
We developed the methods to measure stem diameter variation and electrostatic capacitance of stem tissue as the water contents.
The variation of stem diameter was measured by displacement detector using strain gauge.
The daily variation of plant stem diameter were caused by the unbalance of transpiration from the leaves and water uptake by root.
Transient responses of water contents in several plants to irrigation could be observed as the swelling of stem diameter.
The variation of electrostatic capacitance of stem tissue had also the information of water contents in plant.
Furthermore, we could analyze the influences of the drought of soil on water contents in plant quantitatively and visually by our methods.
Besides, the cyclic change of stem diameter caused by the oscillation of stomatal aperture was observed in several plants and these suggestive information would be very useful for cultivation in future.
These techniques have been already applied to Vine tree cultivation.
