Abstract
A good management on dairy farms includes the detection and recording of sick cows and cows in heat.
These cows can be detected automatically by a system to search for deviations from the normal state of each animal.
Such a system must make use of variables that can be measured automatically.
Different sensors have been developed for various in-line measurements (during milking), such as of electrical conductivity of the milk to detect udder inflammation (mastitis), milk temperature detect sick cows and cows in oestrus, physical activity of the cows and hydration of genital tissue to detect cows in oestrus.
Several experiments have been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of these sensors.
