Abstract
The growing of decidious fruit in Ecuador began apparently in the colonial period with the introduction of several varieties by the Spaniards mainly to the country’s interandean region.
The main production zona is in the province of Tungurahua, which yields 22 680 MT apple, 1 830 MT peach, 4 218 MT pear and 1 020 MT prune which adds up to 73% of the country’s production.
The greatest progress in horticulture is observed in this region, but other provinces like Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Impabura have shown an unusual growth over the last years and it is expected they will become important horticultural centers.
The total produce is intended to be sold fresh in the local market, where demand is still not met.
For this reason the Swiss Technical Cooperation (COTESU) is helping Ecuador develop a fruticulture project to increase production and productivity in order to lower imports and favor consumption on the part of 10 million Ecuadorians.
