Abstract
Apical cuttings of three cultivars of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. were excised and the top was removed leaving the two fully expanded leaves.
The cuttings were rooted in hydroponic system and the rooting and post propagation growth were monitored.
The number of roots, the number of days to the first visible roots and the dry weight per root were mutually correlated which indicates that only one of these parameters is necessary to describe the rooting.
There was a positive correlation between the rooting and the post propagation growth.
High number of roots resulted in high dry weight and a large leaf area of the plants.
Furthermore, cuttings with many roots had a rapid bud break and many lateral shoots with a high growth rate.
These results indicate the importance of a fast adventitious rooting which results in many roots, because this will result in vigorous growth with a high quality of the new plants.
