Abstract
The processes by which grafting incompatibility of fruit trees may be induced are discussed.
On a whole tree basis scions and rootstocks are characterized by a different architecture which implies different hormonal patterns and carbohydrate allocation.
On a whole tree basis scions and rootstocks are characterized by a different architecture which implies different hormonal patterns and carbohydrate allocation.
On the tissue level the phloem should be considered as very important.
Its species-dependent structure and physiology is thought to impose serious problems when two different species were grafted.
On a cellular level, those cells located directly in the line of the union may release compounds (phenols) in toxic concentrations.
By diffusion the toxins move as xenobionts into the adjacent cells of the graft partner.
