Abstract
Methyl 1-naphthylacetate and ethyl 1-naphthylacetate, esters of 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA), have been synthesized and tested on cuttings of two carnation cultivars: Ausonia and Tagik.
The first one with high and the second one with low rooting ability.
The effect of the two ester treatments on inducing rooting was compared with that produced by NAA and with the untreated cutting behaviour.
Esterase activity in the cutting tissues has been studied and evaluated, and qualitative differences among isozymes of the two cultivars were observed.
The difficult-to-root variety evidenced an appreciable increase of rooted cuttings and root dry weight per cutting induced by the esters in comparison with NAA.
