Abstract
The effect of etiolation and shading pre-treatments on the rooting potential of summer cuttings of commonly used woody ornamentals was studied in greenhouse conditions, and the interaction of pre-treatments with an auxin treatment was also investigated.
Rooting of Cotoneaster lucidus was enhanced by etiolation; both the number of roots and rooting percentage were greatest for etiolated cuttings, which also showed the highest enhancement of root formation with IBA treatment.
Light pre-treatment had no effect, however, on the rooting percentages of easy-to-root Spiraea cultivars, Viburnum opulus ‘Nanum’ or Physocarpus opulifolius cuttings.
The number of roots formed on the cuttings of S. japonica ‘Little Princess’, S. ‘Grefsheim’ and V. opulus ‘Nanum’ was greatest when the stock plants had been preconditioned in the highest amount of daylight.
