Abstract
Since 1970 we have set up a plum breeding program in Florence, with the aim of obtaining new early ripening cultivars.
Among several selections, ten have been chosen for promising ago-bio-pomological characteristics and evaluated on the dwarfing ‘Pixy’ rootstock and the standard ‘Myrobalan 29 C’. From the study of growth indices (cross section area of the trunk, crown projection area, plant height and pruning material weight), productive parameters (productivity and yield efficiency) and the fruit characteristics, several valuable selections have been selected for early ripening and for high productivity in comparison with ‘Bluefre’ and ‘President’. The selections have shown a better vegetative and productive performance when grafted on ‘Myrobalan 29 C’; further studies are necessary to confirm the value of ‘Pixy’ as a potential dwarfing rootstock.
