Abstract
Growing techniques and growing media have strongly changed during the last decades.
Consequently, also for peat and peat-based growing media it is necessary to have a good method to characterize the physical properties with the right interpretation.
Consequently, also for peat and peat-based growing media it is necessary to have a good method to characterize the physical properties with the right interpretation.
In this study a cylinder-plunger method was modified and optimized to get a simple routine method.
The relation between present method in use, cylinder-plunger and standard method and horticultural practice was determined.
General comparison of the methods showed that all methods have a good relation with horticultural practice and not a single laboratory method can be indicated which shows the best overall results.
The relation between the methods is very good.
The methods with compression, the present and the developed cylinder-plunger method, show the best repeatability.
