Abstract
The research, conducted in the experimental field of the Agricultural Faculty in Bari (Italy), was aimed to test the effects of different irrigation water salinity levels on spring-summer broccoli (cv Gran Vert), grown in pot and under shed.
Spring water (0.5 dS m-1) was compared to 7 different salinity levels, obtained by mixing fresh water with sea water, and irrigation was applied at 30% available water depletion to bring the soil to field capacity using a watering volume which included leaching.
The effect of saline water was tested by determining – at the maximum vegetative growth stage – some physiological parameters (stomatal behaviour, osmotic potential) and the subsequent total biomass production.
It was not possible to study the effect of saline water on flower head production since bud differentiation did not take place because of the special climatic conditions existing under the shed.
Generally, the effect of saline irrigation water was mostly pronounced on the total fresh biomass production per plant which dropped from 1,581 g to 129 g respectively, when irrigation water varied from 0.5 to 28 dS m-1. The effect of water salinity was also noticeable on leaf sap osmotic potential and stomatal density that showed both a reduction by 2,49 MPa and 48% respectively irrigating with tap water and with water of 28 dS m-1.
