PESTICIDE USE PATTERNS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRODUCTION OF ORNAMENTAL BULB CROPS IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Abstract
Limited information is available concerning pesticide use patterns and practices associated with the production of bulb crops in the Pacific Northwest.
In 1994, a questionnaire relating to pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, nematicides, and fumigants) that are used on bulb crops being grown under field conditions was mailed to commercial growers in an effort to obtain some baseline information on pesticide use practices.
About 50 percent of the growers returned the questionnaires. Narcissus, followed by tulips and iris, were the most common bulb crops grown.
About one-quarter of the respondents indicated they used some type of herbicide as part of their preplant/site preparation work.
Glyphosate was the most common material used and it was applied using conventional tractor-mounted boom sprayers in an average of 151 liters of water per hectare.
Soil residual herbicides were used by all growers to control weeds during the growing season.
Napropamide, diuron, and oryzalin were the most common materials used and herbicides were generally applied by tractor-mounted boom sprayers in an average of 382 liters of water per hectare.
Aerial application of herbicides was also used to a limited extent.
About one-quarter of the growers applied fungicides to the soil at the time of planting to control soil-borne pathogens like Sclerotium rolfsii and Rhizoctonia spp.
Quintozene (PCNB) was the most common material used and the main crops treated were bulbous iris and tulips.
During the growing season, all growers utilized some sort of ground-based fungicide treatments to control a variety of foliage diseases.
Growers applied fungicides in an average of 466 liters of water per hectare, and the highest number of applications were made to Easter lily, followed by tulips, iris and Narcissus. In some instances, fungicides were also applied by air in 93 to 186 liters of water per hectare.
Chlorothalonil, iprodione, thiophanate, and mancozeb were the most common products utilized.
In most instances, growers utilized a rotation of several products and/or tank mixtures of products during the growing season.
A few growers also occasionally applied streptomycin to control bacterial diseases.
