ACONITUM: EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ON GROWTH, FLOWERING AND TUBER PRODUCTION

Abstract
Growth curves of different aconitum (Aconitum napellus) organs show that daughter tubers reached final weight about 4–6 weeks after flowering.
At this stage there was no flower differentiation.
Growth of plants, quality of flowers and production of daughter tubers were all significantly affected by mother tuber size.
Examination of seed germination techniques revealed that treatment with gibberellic acid enhanced germination.
Plants that were maintained at 27°C and above did not develop, while those that grown at 22°C and below sprouted and developed vigorously.
Long-day conditions increased plant height and flower quality.
Blindness of plants was due to reduced winter light intensity and to restricted root systems.
Optimal harvest stage was when only 3 florets were open on the raceme.
Treatment with STS (0.75 mM for 12 h) together with 2% sucrose and a bacteriocide improved vase-life of cut flowers.
