SCREENING FIELD RIESENSCHÄEL CUCUMBERS FOR RESISTANCE TO DOWNY MILDEW: MANAGEMENT OF INTERPLOT INTERFERENCE PROBLEMS

Abstract
From 1995 to 1999, cultivars and breeding lines of Riesenschäel cucumbers were tested for resistance to downy mildew (DM), Pseudoperonospora cubensis. We found that some of the breeding lines had a high intermediate level of resistance, and fruit quality and yield close to the demands of the processing industry.
A breeding line from Daehnfeldt, LD 987723, showed later leaf symptoms and slower development of DM than did the standard ‘Langelands Kaempe Gigant’ (‘Gigant’). LD 987723 was also tested in the field without highly susceptible cultivars nearby.
The results of this test indicated that the level of resistance to DM in LD 987723 is sufficient to grow the crop without fungicides in a year with normal disease pressure.
The development of new cultivars can be expected to increase the chances of successful production of Riesenschäel cucumbers in Denmark and Germany.
