SEGREGATION DISTORTION IN CUCURBITA PEPO

Abstract
Two cultivars of Cucurbita pepo, ‘Early Prolific Straightneck’ and ‘Vegetable Spaghetti’, were crossed, using the latter as the female parent.
The former has dark stems (Ds/Ds) and “type 2” fruits (L-2/L-2) whilst the latter has light stems and fruits (d/d l-2/l-2). Their F1 (Ds/d L-2/l-2) was backcrossed to the latter, as a male parent and as a female parent.
Segregation for stem color and fruit color was observed in these backcross populations.
A reasonable fit to the expected 1:1 ratio was observed when the F1 was used as the female parent.
However, when the F1 was used as the male parent, segregation for stem color deviated significantly from the expected 1:1 ratio.
