Abstract
The effects of treatments with ethephon at concentrations of 0, 300, 350, and 400 ppm on the flowering, fruit set, and seed production of the “L4” monoecious cucumber accession were observed.
Ethephon reduced the number of male flowers as compared with the untreated control.
The number of female flowers did not increase with ethephon treatment but it was sufficient for fruit and seed development.
Seed yield of 400 ppm ethephon-treated plants was approximately half that of the untreated control.
For 300 and 350 ppm, the reductions in seed yield were not as great.
Seed germinability was the same in ethephon-treated and untreated.
Concentrations of 300–350 ppm ethephon were concluded to be best.
