Abstract
The fed-batch culture system using a bioreactor was used for the mass production of Lilium bulblets.
Major nutrients, dissolved oxygen and aeration were measured to provide suitable culture conditions for bulblet growth.
Most of the major nutrients such as NH4+, PO43-, SO42- and sugars, and dissolved oxygen were rapidly consumed within 4 weeks.
In general, nutrient depletion was faster in continuously immersed cultures than with periodically immersed cultures.
Bioreactor culture with periodic medium supplement into the cultures was an effective method for mass production of lily bulblets in terms of labour and time saving.
