Abstract
Vegetable grown in soilless culture in greenhouse Pythium spp. can cause devastating damage.
Control of such root pathogens using common fungicides is usually difficult.
The introduction of biological control agents offer a possibility to control root diseases.
The special conditions in soilless culture makes it necessary to select and test bacteria for us-ing as biological control agents. Pythium aphanidermatum is an important root pathogen in soilless culture and was used as target pathogen in the investigations.
Bacteria strains with inhibition effects in vitro were tested on uninfected and with P. aphanidermatum infected young tomato plants under constant conditions in climate chamber.
Strains with effect against the pathogen in vivo on young tomato plants were tested under greenhouse conditions.
Under greenhouse conditions none introduced bacteria suppressed effectively the disease development.
But the bacterization with the strain FZB 44 increased the fruit yield and reduced yield losses caused by P. aphanidermatum. Based on the health promot-ing effect shown biological agents can be a part of disease management.
