Abstract
Two cultivars of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cvs. ‘Atlantic’ and ‘Superior’) were grown in nutrient solution in order to study the effect of solution temperature on growth, tuber yield and elemental composition (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) of foliage tissue during winter season.
In cv.
Superior, stem height and top fresh weight were higher in plants grown at 20 and 25°C solution temperatures than at 15 and 30°C. Percentage of dry matter of foliage was lower at 20 and 25°C solution temperatures.
On the other hand, there was no significant difference of growth in cv.
Atlantic.
Number of tuber in both cultivars was higher at a solution temperature of 15°C than at the three higher temperatures.
However, there was no significant difference in tuber production between the solution temperatures except 30°C in cv.
Superior.
Foliage concentrations of total-N, Ca and Mg increased with solution temperatures in the range of 15-25°C on 10 days after treatment.
On 40 days after treatment, however, foliage concentrations of Ca and Mg decreased at 25°C treatment but total-N concentration increased continuously till elevating solution temperature to 30édeg;C. Foliage K concentration decreased with solution temperature from 15 to 30°C on 10 days after treatment, while increased with temperature on 40 days after treatment.
Foliage P concentration was unaffected by solution temperatures.
These results confirm that the optimum range of solution temperatures for the growth and mineral uptake of potato foliage is considered 20-25°C.
