Abstract
Growth and quality of cut flowers of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora cv.
Syuho-no-chikara) between grown in wet-sheet culture (WSC) with drainage (WSC/D), or with recycling (WSC/R), and by deep-flow technique (DFT) with intermittent circulation (DFT/IC), or DFT with continuous circulation (DFT/CC) were compared.
A water-retaining sheet (non-woven fabric) was used as a growing medium to supply nutrient solution in WSC. Soil culture was used as a control.
Plant height and flower diameter in WSC/D and DFT/IC were similar to the control, but stem diameter was larger.
DFT/CC produced the shortest plants and the weakest stems.
Vase life of flowers showed little difference between WSC and the control, however, cut flowers obtained from DFT had shorter vase life.
DFT/CC cultured plants had poor growth is probably due to a rise of solution temperature in summer.
A higher quality of chrysanthemum can be produced in WSC than in DFT.
