Abstract
The onion crop has great importance in Argentina and is one of the main exported fresh vegetables; the principal markets are Brazil and EEC. Onion exports have been based on only one cultivar, Valcatorce INTA, which covers 80% of the onion area in Argentina.
A strategy to increase exports is to extend the varietal offerings.
For decades there have been well established onion breeding programs, developing short, intermediate and long-day cultivars.
Breeding goals are earliness and good storage quality in long-day cultivars, introduction of pink-root resistance and high dry matter into cultivars for the dehydration industry.
Recently three new cultivars were released by La Consulta Experiment Station.
Cobriza INTA, Navideña INTA, and Antártica INTA.,
Cobriza INTA was selected from Valenciana type onions, is a long day cultivar, has four dark-brown scales, and excellent keeping quality.
The yield is similar to Valcatorce INTA, but the quality of the bulbs is greater.
We estimate that Cobriza INTA will have a great impact on Argentine onion exports.
Navideña INTA was selected from a Torrentina local population, is an intermediate adapted cultivar; has brown bulbs with three colored scales, and low pungency.
It may be directed towards our internal market.
Antártica INTA is a long day cultivar, obtained by selection from Valenciana type onions.
Has white round bulbs, 14 % soluble solids, and good keeping quality.

Molecular markers have been identified to fingerprint the new onion cultivars.
