Abstract
If one of the Web’s hottest sites (http://www.theonion.com) is called The Onion, obviously someone is seeing one of the World’s oldest food staples in a new light and in essence, this is what we in New Zealand and at So Fresh have done in our quest to position ourselves, and our range of onions, as a quality provider for international markets.

Like this new view of the Allium, we are wanting to change the perceptions of our product and ensure the way we grow, position and market our range of onions is up with the latest in world trends.

Southern Fresh Produce Limited, or So Fresh, was formed in 1993 with the aim of creating a specialist onion marketing company to meet the needs of New Zealand and international markets.
From our inception, So Fresh has developed a reputation for leadership, innovation and the ability to meet the quality expectations of our customers.

From our birth as a nation in the mid 19th Century, New Zealand’s role was as a giant food production ground with most of our produce grown either for domestic consumption or export in a basic form to England where it was processed and value added.

Be it meat, fish, wool or horticulture, this cycle has been central to our national development.

In each case, we have developed an item based on local need and conditions; we have seen an opportunity to export these items in a primary form; and, over time to protect or grow markets, we have had to look at ways of adding value to the business we are in.

Onions are no exception to this general rule.
