VARIATION OF SOME ENZYMATIC ACTIVITIES IN RELATIONSHIP TO SCION/STOCK COMPATIBILITY IN PEAR/QUINCE COMBINATIONS

In order to clarify the role of some of the enzymes involved in different metabolic pathways and to check their changes related to the level of graft-incompatibility, POD, IAAOx and PPO activities were evaluated in four different pear cultivars (Bartlett, Abbé Fétel, Passe Crassane and Doyenné du Comice). The scion cultivars were grafted on two rootstocks inducing different levels of graft-compatibility (the quince clone, BA29 and the Pyrus communis clone, OHxF 333), or were self-rooted.
In the incompatible combinations (i.e. ‘Bartlett’/BA29 and ‘Abbé Fétel’/BA29), a dramatic increase in POD activity was detected, while in the compatible combination ‘Doyenné du Comice’/’BA29’ the activity was comparable to the self-rooted scions or to those grafted onto the Pyrus clonal rootstock.
IAAOx and PPO activities showed significant differences among the different rootstocks only in the case of the ‘Doyenné du Comice’ combinations.
In fact, an increase in IAAOx was induced by the quince rootstock in comparison to the clonal Pyrus rootstock (OHxF 333) or the self-rooted combinations, while the opposite was true for PPO activities.
