EVALUATION OF PEAR INTERSTEMS

‘Beurré d’Anjou’ trees with all interstems except ‘Bosc’ produced trees with smaller canopy volumes than the non-interstemmed control. ‘Bosc’ and/or Brossier P. 2276 interstemmed ‘Bartlett’ and ‘Bosc’ trees were the only trees with larger canopy volumes than the controls. ‘D’Anjou’ trees with BP-1 interstems, and ‘Bartlett’ trees with Brossier P. 2274 interstems were the most productive of the 7-year-old trees. ‘D’Anjou’, ‘Bartlett’, ‘Bosc’, and ‘Comice’ trees with ‘Bosc’ interstems were the most productive of the 6-year-old trees. ‘D’Anjou’ trees with BP-1 interstems produced the largest fruit.
Generally interstems reduced d’Anjou fruit size. ‘D’Anjou’ and ‘Conference’ interstems produced the largest fruit respectively for ‘Bosc’ and ‘Comice’. Cumulative yield efficiency in ‘d’Anjou’ was greater when the BP or Brossier interstems were utilized; however, interstemmed d’Anjou trees were generally less yield efficient than the controls.
Non-interstemmed ‘Bartlett’, ‘Bos’c, and ‘Comice’ trees were less yield-efficient than trees with interstems.
