Abstract
A set of nine SSR genetic markers was employed for characterization of 48 kiwifruit cultivars.
All nine SSR markers used were polymorphic.
In total, 212 alleles were detected, giving a mean number of 23.56 alleles per locus ranging from eight to 38 alleles.
The highest gene diversity was 0.96 detected at two loci UDK96-040 and UDK96-414, while the lowest was 0.74 at UDK97-409 with a mean value of 0.92. When gene diversity calculated across all loci for comparison between A. deliciosa and A. chinensis cultivar groups, mean gene diversity of A. deliciosa was higher than that of A. chinensis (0.91 vs. 0.89). On average, A=3.5, P=97.0% and Ho=0.671 were found in A. deliciosa cultivars, while A=2.6, P=89.4% and Ho=0.546 in A. chinensis cultivars.
All 48 kiwifruit cultivars and selections were uniquely identified by a single locus UDK96-414, excepting two presumably clonal selections Xiaya-1 and Xiaya-15 from the same wild vine.
The consensus fingerprint profiling using the SSR markers is a useful and reliable method for establishing genetic identities of kiwifruit cultivars and selections.
