Abstract
Recent molecular data indicate that southern conifers belong to five separate lineages in four families: Podocarpaceae and Araucariaceae, which together constitute the earliest and most speciose; callitroid members of Cupressaceae sensu lato; Athrotaxis, a separate lineage also belonging to Cupressaceae; and Austrotaxus (Taxaceae).
