Abstract
Conifers dominate industrial wood supply because of their technical and economic advantages for the wood based industries.
International trade in coniferous products has grown more rapidly than overall production reflecting regional wood deficits and industrial cost differences.
Future demand for industrial wood is expected to grow by 0.2% to 1.0% per annum, with faster growth in the demand for wood for particle and fibre products than solid timber products.
Global wood supplies are sufficient in physical terms to meet future needs but economic, social and environmental constraints will strongly influence future harvests.
Conifers will continue to supply well over 50% of the worlds harvest, and company and plantation forests will account for much of the future supply increases.
