PHENOTYPIC VARIATIONS IN MICROPROPAGATED AUSTRALIAN ORNAMENTAL CLIMBER PANDOREA PANDORANA

The objective of this study was to evaluate tissue culture micropropagated Pandorea plants.
We have recently reported in vitro propagation of commercial cultivars of P. jasminoides and P. pandorana (Kancherla and Bhalla, 2001). During the establishment of tissue culture micropropagated Pandorea pandorana and Pandorea jasminoides in glasshouse several phenotypic variations were noticed in Pandorea pandorana plants.
Reduction in plant height of P. pandorana was a distinguishing feature.
Tissue cultured plants were of half the size of control plants grown from cuttings.
Internode length, leaf and leaflet size of micropropagated plants were reduced.
However, an increase in compound leaflets number (from 7 to 13) and leaf serration was observed in these plants.
In addition, tissue cultured plants were found to be a deep green colour as compared to glossy appearance.
These morphological changes were found to be stable for three generations (tested) of vegetative propagation.
In contrast, no significant variation was observed in micropropagated plants of P. jasminoides.
