DIFFERENTIAL INFECTION OF ARTICHOKE PROPAGATING MATERIAL GROWN IN VERTICILLIUM DAHLIAE INFESTED AND NONINFESTED SOIL

Three different artichoke propagating materials were planted in August 2001 in a V. dahliae infested field at Benicarló (Castellón) and in a noninfested field at Alginet (Valencia): A (stumps of cultivar Blanca de Tudela, 2% of V. dahliae infection detected before planting), B (stumps of cultivar Blanca de Tudela, 16% of infection) and C (seed propagated artichoke cultivar Imperial Star). Leaves collected from all plants in both fields were systematically analysed monthly, (from October to April), to detect the presence of V. Dahliae, and infection rates were calculated.
All materials planted in the infested field showed a high infection rate in October, which increased progressively during the cropping season, reaching in April more than 90 % of infected plants.
In the noninfested field, the infection rates at the end of the cropping season were 3.3%, 16% and 0% for A, B and C materials respectively.
These values were similar to the initial infection rates showing the effective transmission of the disease in the first cropping season.
These results indicate that the adequate management of Verticillium wilt of artichoke caused by V. dahliae requires the use of disease-free planting material and noninfested soils.
