IDENTIFYING AND MAPPING THE AREA OF OCCURRENCE OF FIVE SPECIES OF ANANAS IN BRAZIL

Abstract
Brazil is one of the main centres of Ananas genetic diversity.
Four hundred and forty-eight Brazilian accessions were identified, using the Geographic Information System (GIS), ArcView and Access programs, and 1:5,000,000 maps. Ananas ananassoides occurs in the north and mid-west of Brazil, on latosolic or podzolic soils, in dense rain forest, or upland savannah, plateaus or hollows, on plains at 0 to 800 m altitude and average temperatures of 23 to 25°C, while A. bracteatus occurs in the south, on latosols, argisols and others, in deciduous or semi-deciduous tropical forest, on plateaus, at 100 to 500 m altitude and average temperatures of 19 to 23&degC. Ananas lucidus and A. parguazensis occur in the north, in spodosols, gleysols, luvisols or latosols, in low-lying ecological tension areas, at 0 to 100 m altitude and average temperature of 25°C. Ananas comosus occurs as a cultivated form all over the country and rarely in the wild form, on podzols, gleysols or latosols, in dense humid, deciduous or semi-deciduous, forest and savannah, on plains or lowlands, at 0 to 500 m altitude and average temperatures of 23 to 27°C. These results may indicate new collecting areas.
