2,4-D AND KINETIN IN CALLOGENESIS OF FICUS CARICA L.

The cultivation of a unique commercial variety, exclusively using vegetative propagation, can contribute to the proliferation of pathogens, and restricts the potential of Brazilian fig production.
Fig breeding using conventional methods is practically nonexistent in Brazil because of pollination problems and also because of the total absence of the Blastophaga psenes wasp, which is responsible for natural pollination.
We have initiated in vitro studies to complement conventional breeding.
A protocol for callogenesis of fig cultivar ‘Roxo de Valinhos’ was developed using leaves as explants on MS medium with 2,4-D and kinetin at 0, 2.26, 4.52, 9.04, 18.09 μM and 0, 2.32, 4.64, 9.29, 18.58 μM, respectively.
All treatments were maintained for 90 days.
The concentration 4.52 µM of 2,4-D together with 2.32 μM of kinetin promoted the best initiation of calluses, presenting also an initial regeneration of explants.
Greater fresh weight of calluses was obtained with the combination of 2.26 μM 2,4-D with 2.32 µM kinetin.
