Abstract
The phytochemical investigation of medicinal plants used in Indian indigenous system of medicine has been on since long, but the phytochemical analysis of these plants on modern scientific lines was taken into consideration only about two decades ago.
Still a large number of plants are left which have not been completely investigated phytochemically or were investigated when modern techniques were not available.
Fascinated by the very significant medicinal value of the plant Rauwolfia serpentine (Apocyanaceae), it was thought worthwhile to investigate the plant on modern scientific lines.
By using various chemical degradation reactions, chromatographic techniques, UV, IR, NMR and MASS spectroscopy, a steroidal saponin was isolated from the roots of Rauwolfia serpentine.
