Abstract
Cold tolerance of Actinidia eriantha was compared with A. arguta, A. deliciosa, and A. chinensis. When young shoots of A. eriantha, A. deliciosa, A. chinensis, and A. macrosperma in spring were exposed to low temperature, tissue activity severely decreased to less than 2 mg∙g-1 h-1 at 0°C except for A. arguta, but all assayed young shoots turned brown at -3°C. When winter dormant shoots were exposed to low temperature, bud and internode tissue browning of A. eriantha occurred at -10°C, while A. chinensis at less than -5°C and A. arguta at -20°C. In addition, electric conductivity of A. eriantha increased at below -10°C and tissue activity was lowered at below -10°C. When young dormant seedlings were exposed to low temperature, buds sprouting of all seedlings were delayed and about 25% of A. eriantha did not survive at below -10°C. In conclusion, the cold tolerance of A. eriantha seems to be similar to that of A. deliciosa among tested species.
