Abstract
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) plant has a relatively low harvest index.
There is a need to establish an appropriate balance between vegetative and generative growth.
Prohexadione calcium (ProCa) has been reported to reduce vegetative growth in many species through its action on gibberellin synthesis.
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of ProCa on vegetative growth and flowering in primocane fruiting raspberry cv.
Ariadne.
In the first experiment ‘Ariadne’ plants were grown outdoors in pots and treated with different concentrations of ProCa.
Cane height was reduced by 13 to 18% with concentrations of 100 to 400 ppm.
Node number, cane diameter and flower number were not affected.
In the second experiment, ‘Ariadne’ plants were grown in a greenhouse under artificial light and treated with ProCa in concentrations of 0, 100, or 200 ppm, either once, or twice in 4 weeks interval.
The effect of ProCa was more pronounced in greenhouse conditions.
Cane height was reduced by about 20% in the plants treated once, and by about 39% in the plants treated twice.
The canes were shorter mainly because the internodes were shorter.
However, there were 27 to 38% fewer flowers in all ProCa treated plants.
Therefore, ProCa treatment in concentrations tested in this study is not recommended for growth regulation of primocane fruiting raspberry cultivars.
