Abstract
In 2004, 568,000 t of raspberry fruits were harvested in Poland.
It was 32.4% more than in 2003, mainly because of higher yield per area unit; average yield was 4 tons per ha.
Raspberry cultivation is located mainly in the southeastern part of the country with over 80% in the voivodeships of Lublin, Kielce, Kraków and Rzeszów.
The estimated area of raspberry cultivation in 2004 was 14,200 ha, which was 6.9% more than the area in 2003. The main floricane cultivar was ‘Malling Seedling’. Recently, floricane cultivars have been replaceed with primoane ones, such as ‘Polana’ and ‘Polka’. About 2.4 million raspberry plants were produced in 2004, including 1.3 million primocane cultivars.
Most of the plants (1.5 million) were ‘Polana’ and ‘Polka’ cultivars, which have been bred at the Fruit Experiment Station in Brzezna.
The raspberry breeding program at the Brzezna Fruit Experiment Station was started in 1979. Cultivars are ‘Beskid’, ‘Polana’ (1991), ‘Nawojka’ (1998), ‘Poranna Rosa’ (2002), ‘Polka’ (2003) and ‘Pokusa’ (2003). Promising new cultivars, such as ‘Laszka’, ‘Benefis’ and ‘Polesie’, are being evaluated.
